All In One Dental is proud to offer sealants to the residents of Dublin, CA as part of our preventive dentistry plan. A  is a thin, plastic coating, that is applied to the surface of molars, premolars, or any deep grooves (called pits and fissures) of teeth.

How can sealants help?

More than 75% of tooth decay begins in these deep grooves. Teeth with these rough and hard to reach ridges can be hard to clean and are very susceptible to decay. A sealant protects the tooth by sealing the deep grooves, creating a smooth, easy to clean surface and provides a barrier against bacteria.

“This is a fantastic, clean and professional facility. The dentist does not try to force sell anything. Very pleased. It is really a breath of fresh air to be able to get work done without getting pressured. He is very gentle and he got rid of an issue that I had tried to get another dentist to do years ago and they wanted to do other stuff ‘first’. I can’t say enough good things about this provider. Highly recommend, and I hate dentists.” 🙂

Sealants have been shown to protect teeth from decay for many years, but they do need to be re-checked at dental check-ups to make sure they are not worn down or chipped. Not only can they help prevent decay from ever forming, they can also help prevent decay from worsening if the tooth is sealed and protected early enough. Studies have shown that sealants can reduce the chance of decay by 80% in molars.

Who needs sealants?

Any person that has molars can benefit from sealants. Premolars usually break through the gum at around age 6 and adult molars usually break through at age 12. It is a good idea to start getting sealants as soon as your first molars start coming in. This will help prevent decay and cavities from happening in the first place. If you are cavity prone, sealants might be a good option for you to prevent further damage from happening. If the teeth are sealed early enough, they can prevent early decay from spreading and getting worse. This can be a great way to stop cavities in their tracks.

  • Children and teenagers – As soon as the six-year molars (the first permanent back teeth) appear or anytime throughout the cavity prone years of 6-16.
  • Adults – Tooth surfaces without decay that have deep grooves or depressions.
  • Baby teeth – Occasionally done if teeth have deep grooves or depressions and child is cavity prone.

What is the sealant application process like?

The process of getting sealants applied is very quick and painless. Dentist James Huang will first clean and dry your tooth. Then he will place an acid like gel on your tooth. This gel creates a rough surface on the tooth to ensure a bond will form between the tooth and the newly applied sealant. Dr. Huang will then clean and dry the tooth again. He will then place the sealant on the tooth. A special blue light is then applied to the sealant that will harden the sealant. After these steps, your tooth is now protected!
