What are dentures?

They are replacements of your teeth that can be put in or removed at your convenience. Dentures are usually worn through the duration of the day and then taken out at night and placed in a solution to clean overnight. With today’s technology, dentures are more comfortable than ever and even look more natural than in the past.

“This is a fantastic, clean and professional facility. The dentist does not try to force sell anything. Very pleased. It is really a breath of fresh air to be able to get work done without getting pressured. He is very gentle and he got rid of an issue that I had tried to get another dentist to do years ago and they wanted to do other stuff ‘first’. I can’t say enough good things about this provider. Highly recommend, and I hate dentists.” 🙂

Do I have choices when it comes to dentures?

There are three types of dentures available to you. The first two types are full dentures. A full denture is a set of all new teeth. This type of denture will be used when you are missing most or all of your teeth. If you are missing most of your teeth and only have a few teeth left, those remaining teeth will be extracted before you receive your new full set of dentures. There are two different types of full dentures available. The third option we have available is partial dentures. Partial dentures are used when there are very few missing teeth only and when a full set of dentures is not needed. Below is the three different denture types we offer and the differences between them.

Conventional full dentures are dentures that will be placed only after all remaining teeth have been extracted and your gums have healed. This healing period can take up to several months, which in the meantime, you are without teeth. Dr. Huang will have to examine your gums to make sure they are completely healed before you can receive these dentures to wear

Immediate full dentures are inserted immediately after all remaining teeth have been extracted. The molds of your teeth and jaw will have been taken prior to tooth extraction and will be ready to insert the same day of extraction. This is a great option for people that would like to not go months without teeth. However, they will need to be adjusted after several months of having them. Your bone structure will change after having your teeth removed and these dentures will become loose once that happens.

Partial dentures are used when most teeth are still in-tact and you are only replacing one tooth or a few teeth. The partial teeth are set on a metal frame which then attaches to your natural teeth to act as an anchor.

What do dentures feel like?

It will take some time to get adjusted to your dentures before they feel normal so don’t worry. For a few weeks or even a few months after receiving your dentures, they could feel uncomfortable or just a little bit weird. Learning to speak with them and eat with them will get easier over time. They might feel too big, bulky, or loose at first. If you are producing extra saliva, if you feel like your tongue does not have enough room, and even if you have minor irritation or sore gums, this is all relatively normal and common. The only time new dentures should cause concern is if you are having severe pain and irritation. If this occurs, call Dr. Huang for an appointment so he can check your dentures. An examination will be made of your dentures and of your gums to make sure there are no major problems.

How do I take care of my dentures at home?

You want to be very careful with your dentures to keep them from breaking, drying out, or warping. These common mishaps can be easily avoided by following these simple steps:

  • When taking out your dentures, stand over water or a secure container that would catch them if they were to fall. Dentures are made of acrylic and are very easily broken if dropped on a hard surface.
  • Always keep them in denture solution or water when you are not wearing them. This is to be done especially if they are taken out at night while you sleep. You must be sure to keep them in a solution or water to make sure they do not dry out.
  • Do not use hot water on dentures. Hot water can cause them to warp and can even cause them to change shape because of this.
  • Brush your dentures thoroughly every day like you would your natural teeth. It is crucial to keep them clean and to remove the food and build up from daily activities while wearing them.
  • Stimulate your gums before putting your dentures in. This helps the circulation and even helps remove plaque. You can do this by gently brushing your gums, roof of your mouth, and tongue in circular motions with a soft bristled toothbrush.

It is very important to remember that the length of time your dentures can last, is greatly dependent on how well they are taken care of. Always remember if they are chipped, cracked, bent, or in need of adjustment in any way, do not try to do this yourself. Always see Dr. Huang to make any adjustments to your dentures. You must also see Dr. Huang for at least an annual check-up yearly to check the quality of your dentures.
