What should I expect when getting my teeth whitened?

Since every patient has different needs, the treatment will be slightly different for every patient. Depending on your current tooth color and the color you would like, you may need more than one visit to achieve your desired results. During a single visit, your teeth can lighten by 5 to 10 shades. If you still would like more drastic results after your office visit, you may continue the process at home with whitening trays.

At the first visit with Dr. Huang, you will have an impression taken of your teeth, which will set the mold for the whitening trays.

During your second visit, the custom-made trays will be fitted to ensure they fit your bite, and this is where any necessary adjustments will be made. You can wear your whitening trays twice a day for 30 minutes or overnight, depending on your preference. Your treatment length will depend on the severity of your needs and will be determined by Dr. Huang.

The Sinsational Smile® whitening method

This method is very quick and only lasts 20 minutes! Sinsational Smile uses fast, effective technology with our patented pre-filled silicone trays. This allows the jaw to remain relaxed and the person to remain comfortable throughout the 20-minute procedure. This procedure uses an LED accelerating light to activate the gel’s whitening ingredients faster, resulting in a brighter smile and whiter teeth in less time.

As part of your procedure, you’ll also receive a take-home maintenance pen to further extend your new, brighter smile. The number of treatments needed will vary based on the results you would like to see. One treatment may be enough, or you may require repeated treatments to maintain your results.

Are there any side effects?

It is common after a teeth-whitening treatment for your teeth to be sensitive to hot or cold foods and drinks. The sensitivity should subside within a few days after your treatment. If the sensitivity persists, schedule an appointment to see Dr. Huang. Whitening treatments can only change the color of natural tooth enamel and will not change the color of fillings, crowns, or veneers.

If you are scheduled to have fillings, crowns, or veneers placed, it is advisable to have the whitening treatment done first so the crown or filling color can be matched to your new, whiter teeth. Follow all directions given by your dentist and do not use whitening products more than instructed. Too much whitening can irritate your gums and may even destroy the enamel on your teeth. Teeth whitening is not for everyone. Make sure to get a general checkup to discuss the condition of your teeth and if whitening is an option for you.
