How else do I ensure good oral health at home?

Brushing your teeth – You should brush your teeth at least twice a day. It is best to brush your teeth in the morning and also at night before you go to bed. The best type of toothbrush that should be used is an ADA approved soft bristle brush and toothpaste. Do not use toothbrushes with medium or hard bristles. These will be too hard on your teeth and could end up doing more damage than good to your oral health. Electric toothbrushes are highly recommended. They have been proven to remove more plaque than ordinary manual toothbrushes. Follow these steps to properly brush your teeth:

  1. Place the brush at a 45 degree angle to the gums and gently brush using small circular motions. You should be brushing so that you feel the bristles on your gums also
  2. Brush the outer, inner, and biting surfaces of each tooth.
  3. Use the tip of the toothbrush to clean the inside of the front teeth
  4. Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath

Flossing – Flossing daily is the best way to clean between the teeth and under the gumline. Flossing not only helps clean these spaces, it disrupts plaque colonies from building up. By not allowing the plaque to build up, you are also preventing damage to the gums, teeth, and bone. Here is how to properly floss:

  • Take at least 12-16 inches (30-40cm) of dental floss and wrap it around your middle or index fingers
  • Navigate the floss between your teeth using a zigzag motion
  • Curve the floss into a “C” shape around each tooth and under the gumline. Gently move the floss up and down, cleaning the side of each tooth
  • Be sure to use a clean area of floss on each tooth

If conventional floss string is difficult for you to use, you may also use individual floss picks. You may use the same methods listed above if you are using floss picks to floss your teeth

Rinsing your mouth – It is important to rinse your mouth with water after brushing your teeth. You should also rinse your mouth with water or with a mouthwash after meals if you are unable to brush your teeth. Dr. Huang may also suggest you use additional aids such as interdental brushes, rubber tip stimulators, tongue cleaners, irrigation devices, fluoride, medicated rinses, etc. to make your oral health even better. These can all play a role in good dental home care.
