“This is a fantastic, clean and professional facility. The dentist does not try to force sell anything. Very pleased. It is really a breath of fresh air to be able to get work done without getting pressured. He is very gentle and he got rid of an issue that I had tried to get another dentist to do years ago and they wanted to do other stuff ‘first’. I can’t say enough good things about this provider. Highly recommend, and I hate dentists.” 🙂

What are the benefits of scaling and root planing?

If you do a little research, you will find that chronic inflammation has been linked to numerous illnesses. If you don’t get SRP done, then your gums will stay inflamed and increase risk factors for serious conditions, such as heart disease. So scaling and root planing doesn’t just improve your oral health, it can actually improve your overall health. Scaling and root planing helps you:

  • Avoid invasive surgical procedure down the road
  • Reduce the possibility of tooth and bone loss
  • Eliminate gum pockets for bacterial growth
  • Restore functionality to teeth
  • Heal any pain, tenderness, sensitivity, and swelling

What is scaling and root planing?

You may have heard of scaling and root planing already, as it sometimes called “deep dental cleaning” or “conventional periodontal therapy.” Whatever the name, all of these procedures have the same goal: to remove bacteria above and below your gumline. You’ve most likely heard of plaque–it’s the sticky film of bacteria that can coat your teeth and cause cavities. If plaque isn’t taken care of regularly, it can harden into tartar (also called calculus). Only your dentist can remove tartar, and if it’s not taken care of, then it can build up in your gums, causing inflammation. When your gums become inflamed, they can actually pull away from your teeth and form pockets, which can trap even more bacteria. In

When your gums become inflamed, they can actually pull away from your teeth and form pockets, which can trap even more bacteria. In worst-case scenarios, these pockets can lead to both bone and tooth loss. During your annual cleanings, your dentist will probe your gum pockets to see if you need SRP.

If you do need SRP, there is nothing to worry about. Your dentist will numb the roots of your teeth with a local anesthetic during the procedure, so you shouldn’t feel discomfort. During SRP, your dentist will use both periodontal scalers and periodontal curettes. Scalers are instruments with narrow tips and scraping edges that can clean the narrow spaces between your teeth. Curettes are used to clean the rest of your gums, and unlike scalers, they have blunt tips to avoid gum trauma during cleaning. Your dentist may also use ultrasonic instruments to “vibrate” and loosen up bacteria.
